- Can you learn wedding dances from YouTube and TikTok?
In recent years, I’ve been seeing more and more videos on social media saying things like, “We prepared our first dance ourselves. You really don’t need lessons!” And actually, yes, you can prepare your own first dance. Especially if you enjoy dancing and have some experience, it is absolutely possible. You can find plenty of beautiful ideas and dance moves on YouTube, TikTok and Instagram. But there is one small detail to keep in mind: Just because a move looks beautiful in a video doesn’t mean it will look beautiful on you. Not every beautiful move suits every couple When you watch a choreography online and try to recreate it, it’s easy to overlook a few important things. The couple in the video may have a different height difference than you. The movement may not suit your dance level. The rhythm of your chosen song may not work perfectly with that choreography. And your wedding dress can even make a difference. The shape and volume of your skirt, the train of your dress, or the height of your shoes can turn a move that looks easy online into something surprisingly difficult on your wedding day. And then there is one of the most important things: You can’t see yourself from the outside. While dancing, you may feel that you are doing a movement correctly, when in reality your posture, arm position, or the distance between you and your partner may be off. You can watch the video over and over again, but unless someone is watching you from the outside and immediately correcting you — “Stand a little taller here,” “Open your arm a little more,” “Follow your partner more closely on this turn” — you may keep repeating a movement incorrectly without even realizing it. This is one of the areas where I see the biggest difference after years of working with couples. Sometimes you don’t even need to change the choreography. A very small adjustment to posture, hand position, arm movement or timing can completely change the way a dance looks. So, are dance lessons necessary? No. I don’t think they are. But I think there is a better question to ask yourself: Not “Can we prepare our first dance ourselves?” but rather: “How do we want our first dance to look, and how much time do we have to prepare it?” When we see couples on social media who have prepared their own dance, we usually see only the final result. We don’t know their dance background, how many times they rehearsed, how many movements they tried and eventually removed, or how many hours of practice went into that final video. And then there’s the budget... Yes, preparing your first dance with a professional means setting aside a separate budget for it. But instead of seeing it simply as an unnecessary expense, you can also see it as a professional service for a detail that matters to you on your wedding day. Just as you may choose to work with a professional who understands how to create a dress specifically for you rather than simply going to a local tailor, or entrust your wedding photography to someone who has been doing it professionally for years rather than relying on a friend who happens to have a good phone, the same principle applies to your wedding dance. Of course, you can design your own dress, have a friend take your photos, or prepare your dance by following videos you find online. All of these are possible. But this is exactly where professional service makes a difference: When experience, proper technique and personalized coaching come together, the result reflects that. Some couples say, “We’ll watch a few videos and prepare it ourselves,” and genuinely enjoy the process. Others say, “We don’t want to worry about this on our wedding day. We want a dance that truly suits us and feels comfortable.” Both are perfectly valid. What matters is what you expect from your first dance. My job is to help couples who choose the second option. With my experience in wedding dance since 2006, rather than simply teaching you a move exactly as you saw it online, I work on creating a dance that is suited to your dance level, your music, your body, your wedding dress, and the way you move together as a couple. Because to me, a well-prepared first dance isn’t the one with the most difficult moves. It’s the one where the couple feels comfortable, natural and beautiful on their wedding day.
- 3 Things Couples Should Know When Preparing Their Wedding Dance
I have been involved in wedding dance and first dance preparation since 2006. During this time, I have worked with over 3,000 couples. While every couple has a different dance level, music preferences, and wedding dreams, over the years I've seen that some things are important to almost every couple. 1. Don’t choose a choreography just because it looks beautiful It’s completely natural to see a beautiful dance online and want to recreate it at your own wedding. However, a choreography that looks amazing on one couple may not have the same effect on you. Your dance level, height difference, wedding dress, and even your wedding venue can all influence the right choice. When I work with couples, I don’t first ask, “Is this move beautiful?” I ask, “Does this move suit this couple?” 2. A more difficult dance doesn’t necessarily mean a better dance One of the things couples worry about most before their first dance is, “What if we forget it?” 😊 Especially when there is very little time before the wedding, I prefer focusing on dancing better with fewer movements rather than trying to learn too many figures and a complicated choreography. Good technique, proper posture, and connection with your partner can sometimes make a much bigger difference than learning ten new moves. 3. Don’t experience your wedding day like a rehearsal The purpose of your first dance isn’t to give a flawless performance. It’s to enjoy those few minutes together. That’s why, during lessons, it’s important to work not only on the choreography, but also on how to enter the music, how to follow each other, where to breathe, and how to recover if you get nervous or lose your place. To me, a beautiful first dance is not one where you can tell that the couple has memorized every move. It’s one where you can see that they trust each other and are truly dancing together. After all these years of working with couples, my approach hasn’t changed: Instead of teaching everyone the same dance, I prefer to find the dance that looks and feels the most natural and beautiful for each couple. Because when you step onto the dance floor on your wedding day, you’ll be doing something much more beautiful than simply performing a choreography: You’ll be dancing together. ❤️
- Online Class or In-person Class?
In wedding dancing, what matters isn't where the lesson takes place! When it comes to wedding dance, the first thing that usually comes to mind is face-to-face lessons. Being in front of the instructor, working in the same studio, seeing the movements firsthand… Is this really the most important thing for a beautiful first dance? I have been teaching dance for over 20 years, and with my experience in wedding dance since 2006, I can confidently say that it 's not about whether the lesson is in person or online. It's about what kind of dance is prepared for the couple. Because this summer we saw many different kinds of wedding dances again. We saw dances that had been taught in person, but that made you think, "I wish they hadn't danced at all..." Dances that are memorized step by step, where the couple is more focused on remembering the movements than feeling the music, with a somewhat school play feel… Then there are the dances where the bride performs the entire dance alone, while the groom merely acts as a prop on the dance floor… Then one inevitably begins to think: So it's not just about taking in-person classes. So what makes for a good first dance? A good first dance needs to belong to the couple first. It needs to suit their dance level, style, height difference, mobility, the music they choose, the wedding venue, and most importantly, the style of their wedding dress . There's little point in recognizing how beautiful a choreography looks if you can't move freely in your wedding dress. Similarly, a move that looks very impressive on the internet doesn't necessarily have to look the same on your body or at your dance level. For me, one of the most important aspects of a first dance is the connection between the couple. It's not just about getting the steps right; it's about following each other, looking at each other, feeling the same rhythm, and truly appearing to be dancing together. Because the first dance isn't about two people performing the same choreography separately. Two people dancing together. That's where the advantage of online classes comes in. I can work with couples online from the comfort of their own homes. There's no traffic, road, parking, or rushing to get to the studio after work. This is a significant convenience, especially for couples who already have limited time amidst their wedding preparations. And perhaps most importantly, online classes don't prevent the dance from being tailored to the individual. When I work online, I can easily observe the couple's movements, dance level, harmony, and what comes naturally to them from across the screen. The goal isn't to send a ready-made choreography online and say, "Learn this." On the contrary, the aim is to eliminate potentially inappropriate actions from the start. In person or online? I don't think there's a single right answer to this question. Some couples enjoy working in a studio, while others prefer the comfort of their own home. Some have the time, while for others rehearsing at home is much more practical. But whichever format you choose, it's far more important to ask yourself this question: "Does this dance really suit us?" Because you don't want people thinking, "How many lessons did this couple take?" when you're on the dance floor on your wedding day. They don't necessarily have to say, "There's so much activity!" What we want is much simpler: A first dance that complements each other, can be performed comfortably in a wedding dress, carries the music, looks natural, and conveys the bond between the couple. And for this, what matters more than where the lesson takes place is the type of dance that is prepared for you . For me, a well-prepared first dance isn't one with the most difficult moves, the most steps, or the longest choreography. It's the dance where the couple feels comfortable, natural, elegant, and truly connected on their wedding day. ❤️
- Why Couples Should Take Dance Lessons from a Professional for Their First Dance Before Their Wedding
Planning a wedding is a whirlwind of excitement and anticipation, but among all the details, the first dance holds a special significance for many couples. It’s not just a moment to show off your moves; it’s an opportunity to express your love and celebrate the beginning of your new journey together. Here’s why taking professional dance lessons for your first dance is a must: 1. Boost Your Confidence The dance floor can be a daunting place, especially under the watchful eyes of family and friends. Professional dance lessons equip couples with the skills and confidence to shine during their first dance. With proper instruction, you’ll feel more self-assured and less anxious, allowing you to enjoy the moment instead of worrying about your steps. 2. Comfort in Your Wedding Attire Wearing a wedding dress or tuxedo can change how you move, and dancing in formal attire can feel awkward without preparation. Professional instructors can help you practice in your actual wedding clothes, ensuring you become familiar with the feel of the fabric and the limitations of your outfit. This comfort will make it easier to enjoy your first dance without feeling restricted or clumsy. 3. Personalized Choreography Every couple is unique, and so should their first dance be! Professional dance lessons allow for personalized choreography that reflects your individual styles and relationship. An experienced instructor will tailor a routine that matches your skill level and preferences, whether you envision a romantic waltz, a fun salsa, or something completely original. This customization makes your first dance even more special and memorable. 4. Efficient Preparation Preparing for your first dance can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re trying to learn on your own. Professional dance lessons streamline the learning process. Instead of spending countless hours searching for tutorials online, you’ll have a structured curriculum that maximizes your practice time. A professional will guide you step by step, ensuring you learn the essential moves quickly and efficiently, leaving you with more time to focus on other wedding preparations. 5. Creating Lasting Memories Dance lessons aren’t just about learning to move; they’re about creating lasting memories with your partner. The process of learning and practicing together fosters teamwork and connection, allowing you to bond in a fun and engaging way. These shared experiences will become cherished memories that you’ll look back on fondly long after the wedding day is over. 6. Impress Your Guests A well-rehearsed first dance can leave a lasting impression on your guests. With professional guidance, you can perform a routine that dazzles your friends and family, showcasing your hard work and dedication. The wow factor of a beautifully executed dance will not only enhance your wedding’s atmosphere but also inspire other couples in attendance. 7. Stress Relief Wedding planning can be stressful, and taking dance lessons provides a welcome break from the chaos. Focusing on your dance can be a fun and relaxing way to spend time together as a couple, helping to ease the pressures of wedding planning. Taking professional dance lessons for your first dance is a valuable investment in your wedding experience. From boosting your confidence to creating personalized choreography, these lessons prepare you not only for the dance itself but for the joyous celebration of your love. So, step out onto the dance floor with grace, style, and comfort, and let your first dance be a beautiful reflection of your relationship.
- 5 Common Mistakes Made in the Wedding Dance
Based on my 18 years of experience in wedding dancing and impressions from numerous dance videos I've come across on social media, I want to share five common mistakes made during the wedding dance. I hope you won’t fall into these traps! Keeping the Music Too Long: A duration of 2-2.5 minutes is perfectly sufficient for the first dance. By keeping the music short, you can leave a memorable impact on your audience. I recommend shortening your music using a professional music editing program to create an unforgettable effect. Looking at Your Feet: As you look down at your feet, we feel the urge to look at them too. Also, don’t forget that from the outside, you may look like two stubborn goats butting heads! Especially, gentlemen, you need to be extra careful about this!!!! My grooms know why. Don’t Talk During the Dance: As you talk, the audience starts paying more attention to understand what you’re saying, and your photos will end up showing you with funny expressions. I don’t mind if you sing along to the song; I think it captures sweet and natural moments, especially when you smile unintentionally. I can already imagine some photographers giving me a hard time. 🤣🤣🤣 The choice is yours. Don’t Count: Don’t just count the rhythm with your mouth; use your eyes and nod your head up and down too. If you’re struggling to catch the rhythm, you can practice our rhythm exercises. Alternatively, you can choose a song with a rhythm that you can easily follow. And the most, most, most important thing! Please work with an experienced instructor in wedding dance❣️ You might find an excellent ballet, salsa, or tango instructor, but please check their wedding experience. Be sure to watch the dances of the couples they've trained! When the wedding dress comes into play, the whole dynamic of the dance changes. You may not be able to perform a dance you do comfortably in everyday clothes on your wedding day while wearing a gown. So don’t leave it to chance; work with an instructor who has wedding experience and whose couples' dances and style you admire. Remember, the wedding dance will be one of your unforgettable moments. Avoid mistakes and enjoy this special day! 💃🕺
- 3 IMPORTANT TIPS YOU WON'T HEAR ANYWHERE ELSE
Here are 3 lifesaving tips based on my years of experience in the wedding industry since 2006, drawn from countless weddings I've attended, specifically noted for you wonderful couples, and shared with all my students. You won't hear these anywhere else: 1. Pedicure Matters : Getting a pedicure a few days before the wedding is a great idea, but be careful when softening the soles of your feet with a pumice stone! Even the comfiest heels can be uncomfortable, so consider saving the pumicing for after the wedding to avoid sore feet. 2. Pain Relief Precaution : Always keep pain relief medication in your wedding bag. Tight updos can lead to headaches after a while. Being prepared at all times is the best way to prevent surprise headaches. 3. Freshen Your Breath : Don't forget to add mints or gum to your wedding bag. You may not have a chance to brush your teeth after the meal, so a little sweetness will help freshen your breath. I hope these tips help make your special day more enjoyable and smooth. Wishing you an unforgettable wedding! 🎊
