3 Things Couples Should Know When Preparing Their Wedding Dance

I have been involved in wedding dance and first dance preparation since 2006. During this time, I have worked with over 3,000 couples. While every couple has a different dance level, music preferences, and wedding dreams, over the years I've seen that some things are important to almost every couple.

1. Don’t choose a choreography just because it looks beautiful

It’s completely natural to see a beautiful dance online and want to recreate it at your own wedding. However, a choreography that looks amazing on one couple may not have the same effect on you.

Your dance level, height difference, wedding dress, and even your wedding venue can all influence the right choice. When I work with couples, I don’t first ask, “Is this move beautiful?” I ask, “Does this move suit this couple?”

2. A more difficult dance doesn’t necessarily mean a better dance

One of the things couples worry about most before their first dance is, “What if we forget it?” 😊 Especially when there is very little time before the wedding, I prefer focusing on dancing better with fewer movements rather than trying to learn too many figures and a complicated choreography.

Good technique, proper posture, and connection with your partner can sometimes make a much bigger difference than learning ten new moves.

3. Don’t experience your wedding day like a rehearsal

The purpose of your first dance isn’t to give a flawless performance. It’s to enjoy those few minutes together.

That’s why, during lessons, it’s important to work not only on the choreography, but also on how to enter the music, how to follow each other, where to breathe, and how to recover if you get nervous or lose your place.

To me, a beautiful first dance is not one where you can tell that the couple has memorized every move. It’s one where you can see that they trust each other and are truly dancing together.

After all these years of working with couples, my approach hasn’t changed: Instead of teaching everyone the same dance, I prefer to find the dance that looks and feels the most natural and beautiful for each couple.

Because when you step onto the dance floor on your wedding day, you’ll be doing something much more beautiful than simply performing a choreography:

You’ll be dancing together. ❤️
