Can you learn wedding dances from YouTube and TikTok?

In recent years, I’ve been seeing more and more videos on social media saying things like, “We prepared our first dance ourselves. You really don’t need lessons!”
And actually, yes, you can prepare your own first dance. Especially if you enjoy dancing and have some experience, it is absolutely possible. You can find plenty of beautiful ideas and dance moves on YouTube, TikTok and Instagram.
But there is one small detail to keep in mind:
Just because a move looks beautiful in a video doesn’t mean it will look beautiful on you.
Not every beautiful move suits every couple
When you watch a choreography online and try to recreate it, it’s easy to overlook a few important things.
The couple in the video may have a different height difference than you. The movement may not suit your dance level. The rhythm of your chosen song may not work perfectly with that choreography.
And your wedding dress can even make a difference.
The shape and volume of your skirt, the train of your dress, or the height of your shoes can turn a move that looks easy online into something surprisingly difficult on your wedding day.
And then there is one of the most important things:
You can’t see yourself from the outside.
While dancing, you may feel that you are doing a movement correctly, when in reality your posture, arm position, or the distance between you and your partner may be off.
You can watch the video over and over again, but unless someone is watching you from the outside and immediately correcting you — “Stand a little taller here,” “Open your arm a little more,” “Follow your partner more closely on this turn” — you may keep repeating a movement incorrectly without even realizing it.
This is one of the areas where I see the biggest difference after years of working with couples.
Sometimes you don’t even need to change the choreography.
A very small adjustment to posture, hand position, arm movement or timing can completely change the way a dance looks.
So, are dance lessons necessary?
No. I don’t think they are.
But I think there is a better question to ask yourself:
Not “Can we prepare our first dance ourselves?”
but rather:
“How do we want our first dance to look, and how much time do we have to prepare it?”
When we see couples on social media who have prepared their own dance, we usually see only the final result.
We don’t know their dance background, how many times they rehearsed, how many movements they tried and eventually removed, or how many hours of practice went into that final video.
And then there’s the budget...
Yes, preparing your first dance with a professional means setting aside a separate budget for it.
But instead of seeing it simply as an unnecessary expense, you can also see it as a professional service for a detail that matters to you on your wedding day.
Just as you may choose to work with a professional who understands how to create a dress specifically for you rather than simply going to a local tailor, or entrust your wedding photography to someone who has been doing it professionally for years rather than relying on a friend who happens to have a good phone, the same principle applies to your wedding dance.
Of course, you can design your own dress, have a friend take your photos, or prepare your dance by following videos you find online.
All of these are possible.
But this is exactly where professional service makes a difference:
When experience, proper technique and personalized coaching come together, the result reflects that.
Some couples say, “We’ll watch a few videos and prepare it ourselves,” and genuinely enjoy the process.
Others say, “We don’t want to worry about this on our wedding day. We want a dance that truly suits us and feels comfortable.”
Both are perfectly valid.
What matters is what you expect from your first dance.
My job is to help couples who choose the second option.
With my experience in wedding dance since 2006, rather than simply teaching you a move exactly as you saw it online, I work on creating a dance that is suited to your dance level, your music, your body, your wedding dress, and the way you move together as a couple.
Because to me, a well-prepared first dance isn’t the one with the most difficult moves.
It’s the one where the couple feels comfortable, natural and beautiful on their wedding day.
